Weekly Update: Carers Parliament and Carers Rights Day 2020

Nov 27, 2020

It has been a busy week for of us here at Carer Positive!

On Monday we presented a new award to Renfrewshire Carers Centre during a lovely online event. There is an obvious commitment to care demonstrated at the Centre, with both practical and policy support in place. We were also able to read testimonials from some of the carers who work there, which really underlined the difference that good support can make to someone in helping balance work and caring roles. Well done to everyone at RCC on all of your hard work, we are sure your support for carers will go from strength to strength!

On Wednesday the whole Carer Positive team were helping our with the Main Event of the Carers Parliament 2020. The event was held virtually this year due to Covid-19 restrictions, however the online venue allowed more people than ever to attend with well over 200 carers registered for the Main Event alone.

We were pleased to see questions submitted by attendees answered on a selection of caring-related topics, and for the work that carers do to be appreciated by those on the panel. Clare Haughey MSP highlighted that there are now over 200 Carer Positive Employers in Scotland and the strong message that this sends to other employers who need to step up and value the carers in their workforce.

The Scottish Government also used the Carers Parliament to launch their new Carers Wellbeing campaign and support that is available. Call 0800 011 3200 or visit nhsinform.scot/caring for more information.

Thursday 26th November was Carers Rights Day and we were thrilled to see some of our Carer Positive Employers holding events on the day, while others were promoting support for carers online.

Carer Positive spent the afternoon taking part in VOCAL’s ‘Setting Your Internal Carers Network’ event where we spoke with a selection of employers from the Edinburgh area about how they can identify carers in the workplace and set up support, such as an internal carers network. The event went really well with lots of great input from everyone who attended and we hope to run a similar session in the near future.
